Metadata editor?

I have a question for the group.
Over the years the Metadata on my digital photo dates have been changed by my computer I guess.
Is there a way to restore this data automatically. to the original taken dates of the photos?

Thanks,
Don

I would recommend you rename the file to include the date rather than rely on the filesystem access timestamp (as they can become unsynced again over time if the files are accessed/modified.) A tool like Namexif: Rename Photos or Videos to EXIF date might help. If not that one, look for other tools to help you make use of EXIF data. (This is the metadata inside each photo.) Also, you might want to consider whether you make use of a program/tool to manage your photos. Something like Lightroom or Luminar or Darktable (or others 15 Free Lightroom Alternatives in 2020 .)

The EXIF date is missing on about 90% of the photos.
I have a few off sight backups from a few years ago out of state.
I will have to try it on one of them.

Thanks for the tip.
