MBW 980: I Have Never Ate Tomato Ketchup Onions

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

I have @Leo 's pick, the Arteck iPad Mini Keyboard Case, and agree that it makes a very good job of turning the iPad Mini into a mini PC for occasional use. The only downside for me was that I couldn’t tilt the screen quite far enough back to be comfortable. But that may just be me.

I also have the GreenLaw Keyboard case

I got it from Amazon.co.uk but it came from Amazon US so I thought I’d include the US link. It’s called the same thing on the UK site. It has a much wider range of tilt and a useful swivelling hinge, as well as a trackpad which makes it even more PC like. I prefer using a trackpad for things like document editing because I find cursor positioning difficult on iPads, perhaps because I have quite dry skin which makes for poor touchscreen precision.

Unfortunately it’s about half as expensive again as the Arteck, so I guess ‘you pays your money and you takes your choice’ applies.

seems to be a bit bulky

It’ll never win awards for thinness or lightness. But it’s still physically smaller than a laptop, more like a thick Moleskine notebook.

I think I’d pack the iPad Mini if I was going on a break and wanted something easily used one-handed to read stuff or check email. I’d add the trackpad case if there was a risk I’d get sent Word docs or spreadsheets I needed to edit while I was away. Which has happened to me, and it’s no fun trying to do that on a phone.

It’s easy to snap the iPad into the case for as long as I need the extra functionality, then return to using it as a small tablet afterwards. And, unlike a kickstand case, both these cases are genuinely usable on your lap.

Yeah I have the same issue with the angle. I would love to tilt it farther back. Otherwise it’s pretty sweet.

I should probably also mention that my daily usage case for the iPad Mini is a rather nice leather folio case/stand from a brand called Torro. It’s listed on Amazon as “TORRO Case Compatible with iPad mini 7/6” and makes the Mini look and feel like a traditional notebook (again, think Moleskine), but with the usual style of landscape format stand as well. Also has the advantage that it’s less obvious that you’re carrying technology.
