MBW 979: Matt Baloney

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

What I don’t understand about Apple and the EU scrap is Apple’s communications, they speak from “possibly”, “maybe”, “could” violate DMA… Don’t they have any telephones or email in Cupertino that they could call up and organise a meeting to discuss this?

We still haven’t received all of the features for Sequoia - we don’t have the iPhone Mirroring, for example, because it “might” violate DMA. They have had over 12 months since they announced the feature and nearly 10 since its release, yet they still haven’t managed to organise a meeting to find out whether it violates or not?

I can’t see how it could, other than they would be forced to include the functionality in the iPhone to do the same with Windows. The argument that they would have to do the same for Google and Android manufacturers is hyperbole, the mirroring side is on macOS and Google can easily write a program to mirror Android phones if they so wished.

The same with the phone app - heck, I already had 2 phone clients on my Mac.

As for the energy labels (or nutrition labels (heh?) as Andy calls them), other manufacturers have been using them for nearly 2 decades in Europe and don’t have to “mark their products down, in case independent testing measures it differently”, I’ve been through this with a small electronics company and we didn’t have the resources to test internally, so we used one of the many independent services and the total cost just over 10,000€ mark, that was about 7 years ago. Are you telling me that a multi-trillion dollar company with billions in the bank can’t do what a company worth a couple of million could achieve with a single phone call?

I like Apple products, heck, I use 100% Apple at home and work now, but their current stance just makes them look like petulant kids throwing their toys out of the pram!

1997 is almost 30 years in the past, and they are a 3-trillion-dollar company. It’s time to ease off. Screwing over everyone else for the rest of your life because you went through a bad period a long time ago is something you go to counseling for - not something that justifies bad behavior.

Market share is not necessarily the determining factor for antitrust and monopoly, There are a lot of other considerations.

And while they may only have 50% (assuming Alex’s stats are correct), it’s well known that there is a duopoly between Google and Apple with the mobile market. And Google has already been found to be a monopoly.

During one of the shows on Tuesday, Leo’s Internet failed. I think it was MacBreak, so I’ll post this AI slop here.

We’ve had no Internet for 2 weeks :scream:

Turns out some network devices used by our new full fibre ISP don’t work when the temps hit the high 20s and 30s like they have for the last 2 weeks - they go into a bootloop.

Fix rolled out yesterday. Assume either different devices or cooling added.

Having no Internet or mobile data for 2 weeks is not fun! Got a lot of reading done though.

It was a bit like that. Having no Internet makes you realise how much depends on it. Heating system, lighting, Alexa, doorbells and security, everything offline :grimacing:

Bought a couple of old school radios cos I got fed up not having radio.
