To me, one of the biggest announcements yesterday was the delivery of the Preview app to iPadOS. Historically, Preview is an app for Mac Power users; I always felt a bit handicapped when problem-solving on an iPad that Preview wasn’t available.
Preview’s main function is to show you absolutely positively how a document will print on a printer. I will always use Preview as the interface to pre-view documents before printing them. There are also some high niche functions that really have nothing directly to do with printing. One is the ability to trim whitespace on all pages in a PDF document. This trimming is useful if you want to print 2-up or 4-up on a page. This trick allows you to cut all the margins – allowing the text to be scaled up more in the final printed output. Preview geeks love the double-invocation of Preview to do multiple manipulations to the same document without saving the intermediate iterations.
Should iPadOS work the same way as macOS Preview? I sure as heck hope so! Shining a light on Preview should be a boon for the Take Control Book Take Control of Preview.
On my Mac, I keep multiple catalog PDFs open in Preview. I like to leaf through the German Sport-Tec catalog; there is nothing like that 400-page catalog of exercise, massage, and PT equipment anywhere else in the world. Unfortunately, the catalog is in German – and they don’t provide a translated version. Within a year, I fully expect that Preview will be able to translate that catalog to any language – and maintain a close approximation for the translated text in the page layout. With Foundation Models introduced this year, Preview Translate within a year should be a slam dunk.
I was surprised that the panel didn’t mention the iPadification of Preview. I know there was a lot to talk about, but… it’s Preview! I expect that Jason will address this deficiency next week.
The best thing about the WWDC this year, IMHO😊, is that they are now making my iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard my legitimate main portable computer with the new iPadOS (windowing and file management!!!)
