From the transcript:

1:47:53 - Andy Ihnatko
Yeah, I mean that’s a good point, because there was an interview a couple of weeks ago with some of Apple’s chip engineers on a podcast. I’m afraid I don’t have the citation in front of me, but what I remember is how excited they were to talk about how originally they were working, like in 2016, 2017. Of course, they were working on AI, but they were working mostly on machine language for neural engine chips that were mostly there to power computational photography on the iPhone. But they told a story about how.

I looked around a bit and couldn’t find a citation for the podcast Andy was referencing. I didn’t see the link in the MBW #950 show notes. Could you ask Andy and reply here @Leo? Thanks.

I took the phrase I quoted above and popped it into Google. Here’s the top two hits:

#2 Johny Srouji & John Ternus: Chips, AI & Innovation [Summary+Transcript]
#1 From Apple Engineer to AI Pioneer: My Unexpected Journey (Podcast)

Thanks, Paul. I eliminated the Srouji/Ternus interview because that’s with senior management and not engineers. Andy had emphasized engineers in his discussion on MBW. He was talking about an interview a few weeks ago; this one goes back to 12/2023. I was hoping to get a response first-hand (or maybe second-hand) from him.

The Ray Fernando interview has a transcript. Nothing about Ray’s experience at Apple was discussed, and NPUs don’t get a hit in the transcript.
