MBW 1009: We Don't Have Room for Bryan

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

I watched live. Congrats Christina Warren. Sorry Bryan.

I think it’s awesome that Apple is still updating the iPhone 5S to keep iMessage alive. I’m sure there’s lots of old people using those old iPads and iPhones

Yes, it’s fantastic news that Christina is joining the MacBreak Weekly team. Alex leaves big shoes to fill but I’m certain that Christina will be brilliant.

Christina Warren is an excellent choice. I’ve missed hearing on a regular podcast since Rocket concluded, and I am very much looking forward to her perspective.

Or young people who can’t afford a newer device.

Re: the new AirTags, I really hope that Apple puts a UWB chip in all of their devices. Please please put it in the next AppleTV remote. I would gladly pay more for it.

I know I’m generalizing here but I think more older (think: people your parents age, regardless of whatever your age is) hang on to older devices. Obviously not exclusively; lots of hand-me-down devices go to children. But I think it’s more common for young adults to give their parents their old phone. I give my mom my old devices. My mom uses iPads forever. I don’t think my iPad 2 / Air are still in service today, but they could very well be.

I feel like younger people, namly young adults are more willing to take on debt to get a new phone, or take a contract

I’m generally handling my old phones, tablets and computers down to my daughters and their significant others (early 30s)

That makes sense. I could be wrong in my generalization; but I also feel like we’re bad examples because we’re on a tech forum haha. We likely are more bleeding edge than the average person.

I love that you do that though. I’m sad this cycleI wasn’t able to give my mom my old phone, as I traded it in to Apple. And I suspect going forward I’ll continue to sell my old phone to buy the new one.

I think it’s very common for parents to give their kids their phones, but in my head once they turn 30 they might actually start upgrading their phones faster than you. Obviously not always.

They have other things to worry about, like mortgages, children etc. phones, tablets and computers are way down the list of priorities.

I hadn’t planned to replace my iPhone 13 Pro until this year, but my daughter’s X was on its last legs at the end of 2024, so my wife made me upgrade and hand down my old phone to our daughter. Likewise, she had an iPad from around 2016 that was on its last legs and the kids were just starting to get to the age, where it would be useful for playing videos on long car journeys. Her MacBook Pro is from 2017/18 and could really do with replacing.

My other daughter has my old Samsung Galaxy S20+ and doesn’t seem to be considering upgrading it. Again she is saving up for a house, so a new phone is a very low priority. I see the same thing at work, I run the IT department and my guys are all using old phones, (iPhone 12 or older, or similar age Android devices). Smartphones and computers are not something that most people I know, even those that work in IT, replace on a regular basis. For my family and my friends and colleagues, I replace my devices much more often, (3 to 4 years) than anyone else.

Generally, as long as WhatsApp works, there isn’t much reason to swap out a smartphone that still has a working battery.

I do the same with my grandkids
