I’m still making my way through the episode (have reach the discussion on App Creator Studio) - is there any discussion on Elizabeth Lopato’s excellent article on The Verge regarding X and Apple’s (and Google’s) lack of removal of the app
Ms. Lopato does not mince any words in her condemnation of Tim Cook and Sundar Pichai, and I was wondering if the panel discussed it. It would make a good topic for either MBW or TWIT.
The UK government is also under pressure, because they have not acted.
Show of hands - is anyone surprised that Apple and Google partnered here? Anyone? Anyone? (Buhler?) The two dominant mobile phone companies made an agreement with each other. This is the most shocking news since Apple made Google the default search engine in Safari, for the low-low price of 20 billion.
Partnering with Google was a foregone conclusion. Google gets Gemini in Apple products., which is a win-win as Apple likes to make it hard (but not impossible) to use services that aren’t the default. Apple, of course, gets to improve the product that is dumber today than Cortana was on Windows Phone 8 (and Cortana was pretty smart at the time), and both companies crown a defacto winner for mobile AI. Good luck getting a 3rd party, however good or bad, into the process now.
The government’s job is to make the law - it’s down to the regulator, ofcom, to act. They’ve opened a case to investigate the X issue, I think.
Problem is, the images are created, victims impacted, and images copied to who knows where while everybody debates free speech and the law.
When I first heard it, I was a little surprised. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Apple is so far behind with Siri and AI that this is almost a no-brainer.
Now I’ve got to dig out my well worn copy of Ferris mach Blau!
Ofcom has indeed opened an investigation into Grok.
