I enjoyed the discussion on backing up / downloading info stored on cloud services (iCloud, Google Drive, OneDriver, etc.). I follow the 3-backup rule for my devices but I do have data stored in the cloud that I would lose if I am not able to access the cloud service. I have “Download Originals to the Mac” on Apple Photos…a good first step.
I was watching live and there were 2 things I wanted to say but I do not remember. I’ll have to rewatch.
The story about Paris was terrifying and I really think governments need to look into this. I’d never get my Apple account back.
I also live in a very very old apartment. The heating here is oil, similar to a NYC-style apartment with big huge radiators. My kitchen & bathroom are “modern” with electric heat, but I rarely use it. Those rooms are so poorly insulated they don’t really keep the heat inside, so it feels wasteful to use it. I don’t pay for the heat (oil) so I have no control over it. It’s often too hot inside because 2 years ago I complained about being too cold (oops). I typically keep my windows opens almost all year around or else I cannot sleep at night (too warm)
I love windowed apps on the iPad. I thought i would miss slide over, but I truly love the new system and haven’t touched slideover ever since. I usally have 5-6 apps on screen on my iPad if it’s on a table. In bed, I still do use 1 full screen app and then pull up individual apps overtop of it. But I looooove the new windows on iPadOS
In Toyota/Lexus vehicles, CarPlay is like an app inside their own system. And it’s so easy for my dad to go back and forth between CarPlay and his native car stuff. He likes the Lexus map system so he often uses that, but it’s so easy to go back to CarPlay. Similar to what Jason described
Interesting hearing people in the US saying energy bills are too high, ‘cos all we hear in the UK is how your bills are so much cheaper!
Yeah I can’t relate to that either. Here in Quebec we have some of the cheapest power in North America
Here in California our Power bills are very high! My wife and I pay (depending on the season) between $450 to $600 per month and we have had a couple of $900 months and there’s only the two of us in the house
Wow. That is scary. 2 people, a very old house here, and monthy average for electricity and heating oil is under £150. Your two $900 bills are not far off my annual cost ![]()
Yes, it is scary!! We thank our esteemed Governor Newsom and our legislators for the wonderful policies that have gotten us to this point!
Do you run AC? A friend here, in Germany, used to run a business out of his home and put in AC for his office to keep the servers cool. That ran to around $2,000 in electricity every month, back around 2002-2007.
We have AC but only run it for a couple of months in the summer (July-August) and only at 78F from around 4PM - 6PM
So are policy costs loaded onto consumers’ bills? Here in the UK, they’re starting to rethink that and, from April, moving some policy costs to general taxation, so everyone pays rather than the person paying the bill.
Our problems are caused by the fact that In California,
the CPUC a five-member board appointed by the Governor, is the primary agency that approves energy rates for investor-owned utilities like PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E
apparently they’ve never met a rate increase they didn’t think we deserved!!!![]()
Catching up on my thread readings. FWIW, my utility bill in southern Ohio probably averages about $250 a month. Just my wife and I in the house. We keep the thermostat at 72 in the winter and 75 in the summer.
