IM 811: Flippin' the Bird

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

Regarding AI companies wanting to scrap copyright or at least that they can ignore copyright law, I find that disgusting.

Normal people have to pay to consume the content, but big businesses should be free to make billions off the back of other people’s work without having to compensate them?

As I said with YouTube a couple of decades ago, when they ignored copyright law, these companies should have calculated the cost of licensing the material they need into their costs before they started with their development.

I can see a case for using the material without license for research purposes, where the AI stays in the lab and isn’t used by the “great unwashed”. But if it is being used to make a system that should be used by the general populace and they are being charged to use it, then the cost of licensing the learning material should be included in the subscription price of the service, end of story.

I think it was Leo who asked, who is paid when children learn to speak, yes they generally learn from their parents, but then they go to school, where teachers are paid to teach them to speak.

Also, I don’t know how many thousands of Euros we have given out for audio books and physical books to teach our grand children to understand spoken language and to read…

Yet AI should be able to access all that for free? Then why must we pay for it?

I just tagged @Leo with this post on the Discord, but I thought I’d share my thoughts here too… cause this has really been bothering me…

I don’t know what the answer is, but I’m damn sure “let the LLM builders pirate everything” ain’t it! To me that attitude is akin to “let the drug makers kill all the trial patients because the end results are worth it”
