IM 807: My Life in Tokens

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

Is it possible for y’all to use the power of AI to help make timestamps?

I ended up skipping to the end of the Bee Computer segment because I wasn’t that interested.

Also there’s a weird buzz this episode again. I suspect maybe it’s Paris’ microphone? I noticed it when she unmuted her microphone after eating a biscuit.

The buzz isn’t “as bad” when I listen in my iPad speakers. But I still definitely hear it. It sounds like doing laundry in the other room. But in headphones it’s really bad.

I want to see the news pyramid.

I took a nap listening to this episode and my vivid (post-weed, sobriety dreams have been very very vivid) dreams had me, Leo, Jeff, and Paris hanging out at my boxing gym which also for some reason had a pool in it? I’m Geoff so my brain put me in the conversation. I feel like I bonded with the 3 of you way more than I ever have before

My first PDA was a Psion Series 3, the original Psion came out when I was a student and I couldn’t afford one.

I then went through the Series 3a and the 5, before I got a Fujitsu Siemens Loox with GSM module, turning it into a smartphone in 2003.

Podcasts allow for chapter markers. Podcasts like the Accidental Tech Podcast and The Talk Show produce their shows with chapter markers. Podcast apps like Overcast allow you to jump to arbitrary chapters of the podcast.

It would be nice if TWiT would produce their podcasts with chapter markers. OTOH, since TWiT provides transcripts with timestamps, you can always jump to any point in the timestamp: a poor man’s chapter markers. Just open up the transcript and see what you want to jump to.

Depending on how ads are injected, you may experience some clock slew between the transcript timestamps and the physical version of the podcast you’re listening to – a few minutes at most. You can just manually go forward a few seconds past the transcript timestamp to get to the material you want. Overcast allows you to “skip forward 45 seconds” or “rewind 30 seconds” on a podcast, and Siri performs those requests reliably.

Yes! When I dream while listening to a show, I frequently recognize the speakers from the podcast. My brain constructs a room where all the participants and me are physically present. I say things, but Leo doesn’t ever seem to hear me. Strange! It’s not frustrating, but it is curious. The brain creates stories that don’t quite make sense, but it doesn’t seem to worry too much about the inconsistencies. Trippy.

I mostly watch on YouTube (with Premium. so only host-read ads). I did think to myself I could use the transcript but that would require reading a lot. I was thinking maybe the transcript could be tossed through an AI to make chapters. I’ll manage even if they don’t do timestamps. But I wonder if they uncheck the YouTube Studio checkbox that allows YouTube to sometimes automatically generate timestamps. that feature is a game changer.

Leo asked where the data that the Bee collects goes, but they just said “the cloud”. The cloud is somebody else’s computer, so which computer? Where? Controlled by who? Inquiring minds want to know.
