How long do we think M1 Macs will be supported?

We’re in uncharted territory here! At one point in time, one could expect Apple to support an Intel Mac with the latest software update for about 7 years. Now that Apple controls their silicon, perhaps Apple will support its Macs longer?

I have an M1 Pro MacBook Pro that I am happily using. I just have concerns that it is coming up on five years old and I am considering selling it to get something newer while it has some value left. However, if Apple intends to keep these going for 10 years, I wouldn’t mind holding onto it. Maybe March 4th will change my mind, haha.

I know no one here has any further sight into the future, but wanted to get some thoughts on this.

Normally they support for 5-6 years after the end of the sales progs. As they were still selling M1 Airs last year, they should be supported for a few years yet, or Apple will change its policy and people will be miffed.

Apple supported my Intel Macbook Pro from 2011 for many years. I have an M1 Macbook Air so I’m also wondering the same thing as you. I feel like (and as you said, nobody knows) we can expect Apple to support the Macs as long as they support iPhones & iPads.

Given Apple pushed out an update to super old devices recently…. I feel like the M1 machines will at least be on lifesupport for a very long time. I’d love to see them supported until 2030 with main OS updates. and then later on, maybe the same level of updates that the iPhone 5 recently got: keeping the certificates alive so things like iMessage still work

Never the less, with everyone looking to get a M-series Mac Mini to run AI on, now might be the best time to sell it used at a higher markup…

Or trade it in to Apple when you purchase it’s replacement :man_shrugging:t2:
