This is a weird one and it might be the wrong question to ask in a tech forum, but here I go:
It seems that every (at least every second) online service brand is either blue or is rebranding itself to turn blue. Yes, the colour. How did that come to be? I realise that this might have to do more with the marketing fashions of our time, but it might also be that there’s something about having blue on a white ground - especially on a screen - to be more legible, clear, or visually pleasant for some reason. This post is driven by this “Why?”.
Another “Why”: Why even bring it up? It just occurred to me that especially when passing by young and emergent start-up pages, a seemingly large majority of brands look like their logos just fell into the same blue-and-white paint pot. I wonder why those extremely innovative and forward thinking people pick the most center-of-the-road and thats-what-everyone-is-done approach to interpret their external appearance.
Maybe it’s just that: start-ups are driven by ideas and technology, less so by branding. Logos and colours simply don’t matter all to much when compared to making the product a bit better or striking an important deal. Who cares, really? For all I care, just colour it in a way that doesn’t really hurt anyone. Why not blue and white? That has never turned out to offend anyone.
The result is that (particularly start-up) tech looks a bit like branded by smurfs. (slight exaggeration)
Possibly a strange and maybe even an indefensible observation. Anyone want to discuss tech colours? No? Ok. I’ll show myself out.
