Homepod mini announces message but not emails?

I can ask Siri to read my messages, emails and notifications out loud on my iPhone and iPad. But my HomePod only reads out messages. Is this by design or have I configured something wrong?

It’s by design. Only certain apps are allowed to tap into Siri announcements

Just to confirm. iPhones and iPads can announce and read notifications, emails and messages. But HomePods can only announce messages?

So, basically, all the HomePod does is

  • play media, radio stations, act as tv speakers
  • create timers, alarms, reminders, calendar events, and notes
  • act as an intercom
  • act as a hub for smart devices

I’ve found websites that lead me through the steps to create iOS shortcuts to have my HomePod mini run tasks like reading my emails out loud So I think I’ve found my solution.
