HOA 190: Adding CarPlay on a Budget

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

I came to the same conclusion as Mikah on my 2016 Subaru. Used phone mounts running the map app for ages, then looked at these screens you stick to the dash or rearview mirror, but eventually got the head unit replaced with a Sony one that has CarPlay and Android Auto. Very pleased, as it’s upgraded the tech in the car, so we’ll keep it until it dies now.

I actually got a local car audio shop to fit it, didn’t cost much. They recommended fitting a new DAB aerial and mic as the ones in the car aren’t that great quality.

Also fitting it is less of a tech challenge, but more about knowing how to disassemble the central console, transfer switchgear across to the new facia trim you’ll need, and refit without damaging clips and introducing rattles. There’s also a GPS puck to locate somewhere. Mine sits under the top of the dash. USB lead and HDMI too, those are routed through to the glovebox, and the phone goes in there.

Don’t forget any car functionality that uses the screen. Cameras being the obvious one.

Oh, and finally, you need to be careful around any airbags. No putting wires or bits in front of them and creating a projectile if the worst happens.

So I agree, hold off a bit and save up would be my recommendation too.
