It’s going to be great. I’ve booked three tours by locals so we’ll be seeing it ALL!
You will love it. People so nice and food is amazing! Don’t forget to stop by the Dubai Mall. Biggest in the world and amazing fish tank inside the mall with sharks! Have fun Leo and look forward to hearing about your adventure when you return. They love all things tech in the Middle East. Cell phones are HUGE in Dubai!! Everybody has a minimum of 3 iPhones and 2 samsung phones on them at all times! HA
Also don’t forget to pack a jacket and some long sleeve shirts. November it gets pretty cold at night. 50-60 degrees on some nights and really cold if your doing a desert dinner or anything like that.
Great advice! We’re staying at Raffles. I think that’s next door to the mall!
Great 5 star hotel! The service is amazing! That hotel is connected to the WAFI Mall. It’s another mall that is amazing and has some great bars and dining. Best part you walk right out of the hotel right into the mall that looks like your in Egypt! HA
Lots of British expats in Dubai and you definitely have to stop in and have a pint with the Brits! :). They are a fun bunch!
@Leo I’m getting ready to buy equipment for my Twitch/YouTube stream, any in ear monitors you suggest? (Also hello from England).
Welcome @Marti! I’m a big fan of the Etymotics IEMs:
www.etymotic.com/consumer/earphones.html
On the shows I wear professional moulded IEMs by JH audio. They’re really expensive and require a visit to an audiologist to make the molds.
Hi Leo!
I was just thinking about your comments about not wanting to do video as much. But you want every show to be as accessible as possible… Audio accommodates hearing people well enough, but what about those who can see but not hear? Wouldn’t it be best for only shows that aren’t of interest to the deaf contingent to be audio only? You’ve probably already considered this, but I just wanted to mention it just in case.
Hope you’re having a great time in Boston. Safe travels!
Here’s a dumb question. You always warn about clicking links. Is this forum a safe place to click links, or should I have the same concerns as anywhere else on the internet?
I have not used an AV since about 2006, and proud to say I have avoided known infection that I did not purposely install ( I’m dumb enough to once in a while install a virus purposely on an air gapped machine, then wipe it). But I stay “clean” by avoiding links.
I doubt the links are filtered, though I haven’t tried posting an known, “dangerous” link.
Discourse (and thus this site) are meant to be self-moderating to a large extent. After a minimum amount of time as a member who behaves well, you get a promotion and you can report posts. If people see things (including links) that are “wrong” they should click the “…” on the bottom of the post and flag it to a moderator. The issue is that takes time, and so there is a possibility you could be exposed to someone’s dangerous link.
It’s a lot of work, but one way I handle danger online is to run with Javascript severely limited. There is a Firefox plugin called uMatrix. Out of the box it allows first party Javascript. But if you click the “*” and then disable Javascript by default on all sites, you can then train it over time for sites you’re willing to trust. The training is all tied to the site origin, so if you land on a site you’ve never been to before, it will not be trusted. Not running Javascript disables a great majority of attack vectors. There is a downside for sure, though… there are a lot of third party sites out there, like the use of Google’s ReCAPTCH on many sites. These sorts of things can sometime leave you with a broken site to debug… or the decision to temporarily disable the plugin and lose the protection. Definitely not something for the faint of heart.
Appreciate your response and explanation.
My takeaway is that I will treat links within this forum the same as I do anywhere else.
I used to have the NEX5t. Loved the quality, but so tiny in my hands.
Shure had some inexpensive IEMs on Amazon
Thanks. Honestly I’m just wanting good quality IEMs that aren’t hugely visible that are durable. The one thing about Leo is that I never notice his.
Yeah, the NEX 5t is small, which is good (construction zone perils) and bad (see comments on DSC 400). I like it for working on my projects, which is related to soil evaluation in backhoe pits, taking pictures of construction of sewer lines and septic system installations, etc. It does a really good job with color, which is important with those soil pictures.
That said, I do like the heft of my DSC HX400 that I just got this summer. For a “point + shoot” the 50x zoom and the big hand-hold are nice.
I bet that 50x zoom is nice for pics of airplanes on the runway
I don’t think the lack of threading is too bad, As long as we remember to quote relevant text, it should be fine.
Hey Ant, can SLRs/mirror-less cameras typically sync automatically with smartphones these days? Would love to be able to sync JPEG versions of photos to phone for uploading to iCloud/Google Photos immediately for safe-keeping and have RAW on memory card. I am several years behind in camera capabilities and looking to getting back into photography (undecided between SLR or mirror-less - most i’ve tried just do not have the right “feel” as an SLR).
Not so much automatically, but most have WiFi capability and file transfer via a mobile app these days. I’m not a fan of mirrorless. Granted, the tech can be more beneficial, but most don’t feel right in my hands until recently. So I get where you’re coming from, @Pommster . I am a fan of the Canon EOS R and the new Sony A7R IV because they’re a bit larger and feel good in MY hands (especially the Canon). I don’t mind weight of DSLRs unlike most people. At least not yet.
