I decided to side load the Google store on to my Amazon Fire 10 tablet so I could set up my Google Home on it.
My geographic region is Canada.
I’m confused about how the translation from the Google Assistant to Gemini Home is rolling out. From what I’ve read through Google, I think I’m supposed to be waiting for an email notification that , I have access to it. But I’m not clear on a date range. I also read that I can request early access, but I’m not sure how to do that.
Finally, I see lots of posts saying that Android devices can read my email and WhatsApp messages out loud. Can I setup an automation to have those messages read from my nest audio speakers? Or will Google not allow that as they consider that a security risk?
Have you just side-loaded the Google Play Store or the whole Google Services layer? That is the thing that is needed for most of the advanced Android features, like reading content. Amazon should have their own layer for doing this (see link from Amazon, it looks like they have).
I don’t know much about Gemini and living in Germany, we are much further down the list than Canada… One thing to bear in mind, Google Android usually runs on devices that have an NPU, so Gemma probably won’t run, because it is unlikely that Amazon’s FireTV is compatible, but the Google Gemini app should work, I would think, if the relevant Google Services have been sideloaded as well as the store - for Cyanagenmod, the Store and Services were a single side-load, but I haven’t done that for nearly a decade, so I am not certain what you have sideloaded.
I did side load the whole Google services frame work. But that’s just running on top of the Amazon Fire OS?
I do see some other videos that show how to disable Fire OS and put stock Android on the tablet. Might that be a better option than just the side loading?
Also, according to a Google search, the Fire Tablet doesn’t have NPU in its processor. So, what will that mean in the end run?
I have no idea, which open source versions of Android are available for Fire Tablets, so I can’t really answer that question, whether that would be a better option, but either way, it won’t be Google Android and you will have to load the Google Services on top of whatever version of Android you put on the tablet, so it probably won’t make that much difference.
Which also answers the first part, the Google Services layer always runs on top of which ever Android version you are running, apart from Google Android, or at least, with Google Android, the services are built in and are more integrated.
The lack of an NPU means that it cannot do any on-device AI, or at least only incredibly slowly, but I would guess that most software will check for an NPU (and possibly a specific capability), so will just not run on the Fire Tablet. It won’t affect off-device AI (like Gemini, OpenAI, Perplexity etc.).
Ok, I’m pretty sure I understand what you’re saying.
I’m fine with using web based Gemini since the Fire tablet doesn’t have NPU.
I’m going to start off trying the Fire Toolbox from XDA Developers to disable FireOS and add the stock OS which (according to what I’ve see on the net) is the stock android that most Samsung and Google phones ship with.
