Discussion on TWIT 899 about Kyle Rittenhouse

I’m pretty disgusted at the way you spoke about Kyle Rittenhouse. If you took 2 minutes to watch a video of him the term “worst of the worst” would not be your first impression. Young stupid kid, made poor decisions are valid criticisms (he would agree with you BTW). Who knows what would have happened if the conversation on Twitter was more open and inclusive? Maybe he would have made better decisions.

His picture on Twitter in the helicopter with a rifle… that’s him on a hog hunt. Feral hogs are a serious issue in some areas. They cause massive livestock and crop damage. People hunt them using helicopters…its perfectly legal, and useful service to farming communities. I’m told the smaller ones are really tasty

This is exactly why we need all voices on Twitter and a textbook example of something that is perfectly legal but may be offensive to others. I don’t have an issue with hunting personally, but I don’t like to see dead animals in my feed (it’s a downer IMO). Hunters would be like “this tweet is worthless without pics…”. How does Twitter moderation deal with something like this is the basis for a good conversation.

It concerns me greatly that journalists so easily follow a mainstream narrative.

Poor misunderstood kid who crossed state lines with a military-style weapon to kill two people and wound a third and is now celebrated by gun-crazed neo Nazis? Nah.

I don’t think you have all the facts. I did not pay attention at first because the news made it sound like the dozen other mass shootings and I zoned out. When the trial started a youtube video popped into my stream and something just didn’t sound right to me. So I started watching the courtroom footage. IMO what was being reported did not match the facts of the case.

Was he stupid for being near a riot with ANY kind of gun…totally! Someone did point a loaded gun at his head and things went south very quickly.

I understand there are strong feelings about guns and that’s fine. The law allows them for now, and many people like the AR15 platform because the ergonomics are better than traditional hunting rifles. Taking one across state lines does not matter if it is legal to possess in both states.

The fact that the nazis are celebrating him is not his fault. I have not seen anything to indicate he has nazi (or other radical) leanings.

Shortly after pleading not guilty to murder and weapons charges earlier this month, Kyle Rittenhouse showed up at a bar in Mount Pleasant, Wis., clad in a T-shirt that said “Free as F—,” prosecutors said. Then the 18-year-old allegedly drank three beers, posed for photos with members of Proud Boys and flashed a “white power” hand sign.

One thing I never understood, why was the Kyle Rittenhouse shooting a racist issue? I don’t know what else he ever did his life that may or may not have been racist, but that actual shooting event that put him on trial?
I do know if someone is chasing me & threatening my life and I have a gun, it will not end well for them.

Noticed that this story wasn’t important enough to make the show - Republican National Committee sues Google over email spam filters | Reuters

I’m sure that headline brought them many clicks. Digging deeper I learned that his lawyers filed documents with the court that stated KR did not know those people at the bar. KR has commented he did not know that the OK hand thing was some kind of hate symbol (frankly neither did I).

The prosecutor had a very large inventive and government resources to make a connection to hate groups and was unable to. The judge eventually ruled that none of this stuff could be admitted as evidence. Do I trust a newspaper struggling for eyeballs or a professional prosecutor?

I’ve also watched a number of long-form interviews with KR and he does not come across as a “worst of the worst” kind of guy. I might be wrong…but I think the right thing to do is give people the benefit of the doubt until proven wrong.
