Discord Replacement

Any plans to replace Discord, now that it will require verification?

They still keep the IRC servers active

They’re not requiring age verification. It will be required to view certain content, but that kind of content is not allowed of TWiT’s Discord server anyway, so it really shouldn’t be any issue for TWiT one way or the other.

Note: I’m not passing judgment on Discord’s plans one way or the other, just clarifying what they have stated.

I haven’t logged onto the IRC in probably a year. I for some reason to assume that they killed the servers.

Leo has once said (I think on an episode of Windows Weekly) that he really hates killing things and tries to keep them going as long as he can. You can still access the IRC online at https://irc.twit.tv/ or if you prefer to use your IRC client, the info is here IRC Chat

Although I cannot speak to its activity. I don’t really use it. But I have heard Paris mention it in passing she still logs in when she’s live on TWiT

For the time being we’re going to stick with Discord for several reasons:

  1. It’s automatically connected by our club provider Memberful. Anything else would require a manual connection.
  2. Discord is doing this because several US states and other countries are about to require it. I imagine similar age verification will be required no matter where we go. If we went back to IRC we’d have to do it.

The best way to fight this is to fight age verification laws.

Discord is fine. It has its flaky moments, but a restart usually cures that. It works, it’s OK as far as I’m concerned.

I think a lot of people are thinking their management suite needs a hard restart right about now.. this thread is in reaction to Discord’s decision to implement age verification requirements for certain instances - Discord faces backlash over age checks after data breach exposed 70,000 IDs - Ars Technica

While it’s true that TWiT’s instance likely will not be categorized as one requiring verification, we can’t really know for sure. I’ll keep using it right up until the point Discord asks me for my information, at which point I’ll sign out forever.

Last I heard they had full on put the brakes on it until they got a better handle on how it was going to be perceived. Getting Global Age Assurance Right: What We Got Wrong and What's Changing

While it’s true that TWiT’s instance likely will not be categorized as one requiring verification, we can’t really know for sure.

But, it is whether TWiT needs age verification… If TWiT falls under the requirement for age verification in Discord, it will need age verification in whatever replaces Discord as well.

That is a legal requirement for using the forum (luckily TWiT doesn’t have any adult content, so it is highly unlikely to fall under the rules), so no matter what you use to access the TWiT forums or live feed, that system will be required to perform the age verification as well.
