Commodore is back!! I just bought a new Commodore 64 Ultimate - A real FPGA reproduction of the original 64 with a bunch of added capabilities (new I/O but also the ability to use original accessories!!) Check it out at Commodore.net
I’ve been tempted by the Retro Spectrum recreation, but then I can do the same thing with an emulator and a Raspberry Pi.
If I was going to own a Commodore “recreation” I would want a quality keyboard, because so many games/apps were designed specifically for that unique keyboard/layout. I have never seen the full size models with working keyboards in stock in North America, and I almost bough “The Vic-20” from Amazon France, but I had trouble with the checkout and getting validated and by the time it got worked out by Amazon, it was out of stock and I took it as a sign and gave up.
This new thing, more or less official, that @Computeforloot is talking about is really quite interesting, from a technology perspective… but I just can’t spend $500Cdn on a “toy” like that when it could buy me like 8 raspberry pis or something.
The new 64 Ultimate is not an emulator, it’s actually a modern version of the original Commodore 64 in an FPGA, but with some modern additions! That’s what makes it so cool to me!!
This is so cool! Great to see the people who bought the Commodore name actually doing something with it. Do you have it already or is it on pre-order?
These FPGAs are wild. Emulation is good for some things, but you can’t beat purpose-built hardware for accuracy and performance. I’m flirting with the idea of picking up one of the Nintendo 64 FPGA boxes from Analogue. My only gripe being that they don’t support the OpenFPGA framework.
I want one of the Analogue Pocket devices. But I cannot justify spending so much money on what is ultimately a toy to me.
This triggered me to buy Amiga Forever and C64 Forever.

Mine is on order and Waiting to Ship…can’t wait
on order, currently Waiting to Ship!!!
oops, just got a notification from FEDEX - my new C-64 Ultimate will be here Wednesday!!!![]()
Cool they have used the (almost) same packaging.
Yes they have and it enhances the experience- just like the original!! I still remember my first VIC-20 and C-64 unboxing
Well I have been messing with this 64 Ultimate most of the day! It’s sweet!
There is a real FPGA Commodore 64 in there but also soooo much more! Check Out the setup screen…
Also, the manual is a wire bound one that looks just like the one that came with my original C-64 a ton of years ago.
I also tried out a couple of original cartridges and they worked great! Now to dig up a floppy drive and try that out! Lovin this thing…
Hmm, what are the disk speeds like? Are they original or modern? Do you still need Dolphin DOS or similar to get good performance?
C64 with a wi-fi setup option is wild! The physical manual is a nice bonus too.
I loved the fact of the WI-FI
I haven’t tried one of my Commodore original 5 1/4 disk drives yet
ok, I dug out an old Commodore 1571 5 1/4 inch drive and connected it!! The Commodore 64 Ultimate has all of the original connectors to hook up the original C64 accessories as well as HDMI and modern connectors like USB and Ethernet RJ45 10/100. It also has the original port for Cartridges and 2 DB9 connectors for joysticks etc. It also has 128MB RAM - some can be configured as a RAM disk - also internally there are connectors to do lots of other things!! Having fun with this!!
