ATG 2035: From Attic to Basement

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

While I’m not surprised by the announcement, I’m saddened to hear about the end of ATG in it’s current format. I don’t think the current format would have worked without Leo and Mikah being in the same room.

On the subject of using a VPN in China, @Leo’s worries are really not warranted. VPN use is common in China (especially by university students), and travelers have little to fear from using them. It’s worth noting that if one depends on Gmail, a VPN will be necessary to access it.

@Leo I’d not heard of this product from Synology before seeing this review. This might have been a good recommendation for the caller who was considering the WD drive.

You’ll have to forgive this old boomer for the following.
The announcement that Leo will step away from ATG is a sad day for me. I started listening when visiting LA from Alice Springs on a regular basis in early 2000s, discovered TWIT shows after retiring in 2006, and in a way, it got me through the transition from work to retirement. Once in a while I would even try to put in my 2 cents worth if I thought I could help out with someone’s problem. And to my surprise, Leo actually responded on a couple of occasions. I learned that I am not a social network type of guy, and though I wanted to participate in the live discussions in the chat room, was never able to keep up.

I will continue to listen to the podcasts and hope TWIT can continue on. And as long as I listen, I will continue to support Club TWIT.

The new format will be a challenge to some of us old folks. Best of luck Mikah.

And thanks Leo. I think many of us like to think of you as a friend, even if it was only in our own minds.

The show suffered from its onset of being far to complex to participate in. When the original radio show’s announcement of closure for commercial reasons was made public, a greater degree of thought should have been given to its replacement. The two presenter model worked but the pace of the show was way too slow to maintain listener interest in addition to the lack of callers. The shortened one day only presentation of two and a half hours against the previous three has not helped.

I wish Mikah every success with the new format .

Technically, we probably got more “show” in the new format than we did in the old 3 hour radio show, when you take all of the commercial breaks out. But I agree, as much as Leo tried, this wasn’t the same format as the radio show. I do have high hopes for Mikah on the new format and wish him the best.

I didn’t know about it - that’s definitely a great solution for a great price! Thanks!

Looking for show 2036, anything from August?

This was the last episode of ATG. The show converted over to Hands on Tech where Mikah is answering questions.

Episode 2035 was the final episode of ATG. In this episode it was speculated there would be a final one, but in the end Leo decided it would become a “goodbye fest” that he’d rather not experience. This announcement seems to have been missed by most:

I am so sad, I loved how the two of them got along. I thought they were going to continue, but working remotely from their homes.

Yes, I understand how you feel, and I agree that it leaves a pretty big hole in my Sunday. I have just accepted that times are changing, and the audience for the show was growing too old to buy much (probably have most stuff and don’t need more) and so were getting too old to advertise to. (Leo had mentioned something like that at some point… it may have been outside of the recorded shows.)

They talked about that at the end of the show.

I have been away from the show a couple of months. I just downloaded the last 5 episodes, and was sorry to see it ended too. I too thought it would have continued out of their homes.

That’s too bad - his radio show, and then this format was my favorite of the TWIT podcasts. This is really sad, actually…

I’m in the same boat, but unfortunately we seem to be in the minority. It was always my favorite podcast and I will miss it dearly.

It’s technically very difficult to do a call in show without the studio. Mikah will continue to answer questions on HOT - but they’re via email.

We used to use TalkShoe to do a talkshow - if something like that still exists I’m willing to do a call in show from the attic. It’s challenging to do it without screening, of course. I’ll keep looking for a solution we can use to take calls. And if you see something, please let me know.

I’d kind of like to do a late night radio-style call-in show from the attic.

That WOULD be very cool if that got worked out…

Thanks for the explanation…

If you do manage to do the late-night call-in show (which would be great) then please record it so I can listen to it later - your 9pm is my 5am.

I’d still like it if there was a Mikah-Leo show so they get to converse about something, even if it’s not tech. After all, Mikah’s Crafting Corner isn’t tech, nor is the brown liquor section of Windows Weekly. It just needs to be something that generates conversation. How about games-related subjects in some way - both board and console/PC based? Mikah is into Dungeons & Dragons, and Leo has got into a few games pretty deeply. Maybe scope for guest spots from Dan Moren and Paul Thurrott occasionally.

I just remember the quality of the back-and-forth between them when they were doing iOS Today remotely for about nine months in 2020. It would be nice to get that level of conversation back.

Here’s another thought that just struck me. When the radio show was running, Leo was a very good link between callers with accessibility needs, and some experts who had developed resources to help. That link no longer exists currently, so it would be great if any call-in show was able to reinstate those conversations.
