WW 960: Snow & Claus

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

Paul’s audio is terrible this week. I didn’t watch live because I was annoyed by the fan noise, which seems to have been removed in post. Maybe I spoke too soon, it’s pretty awful. Hopefully it gets better as the show progresses.

Paul’s microphone woes continue.

I agree with Paul. Microsoft should give us a Paid Windows 11 for power users. Even when we were paying for windows versions it was still loaded with crap.
WIndows Pro should never have come with all the extra garbage. They should of at least given us a choice to Disable or Uninstall what we don’t want.

Microsoft should give us a paid version of Enterprise which is watered down for Home & Business users to take the place of the Windows Pro Version.

I never use the System Restore Option in Windows.
I am using an SSD. I Image my drive after every Windows Update.

I still use the old Notepad & the new one. You can make a shortcut to it by going into Windows System32 & look for notepad.exe.

I think they do in the Enterprise version, probably with the Group Profiles (GPEdit.msc). I don’t disagree that Pro also should be treated better, but it’s still the consumer version and MS just can help squeezing every last ounce of monetization out of a consumer. You’d think they’d have learned from their Xbox experience that that isn’t sustainable longer term, but well… MS gonna MS.

That’s a lot of work to go to, and not something typical users (or even your average ‘pro’ user) might do. I never do that - but I don’t have any of issues I hear about on this site after a Windows update. It works exactly the way I expect, my machine comes back up, and I’m continuing my work.

I’m not saying Microsoft doesn’t make mistakes - but I think a lot of problems “pro” users have are of their own making. Like this whole obsession with disabling telemetry. I want Microsoft to make Windows better, so I let them collect that data. I don’t send the optional data - but I’m fine with the other stuff. Because it helps make Windows work better.

Microsoft really needs to address the whole Windows product line. Its become so unwhealdy and cumbersome to set up. i’m speakingas a Win 7, Win 11 and WIN 11 Pro user. I have been lucky with my Kit/Win combination so far but many non tech savvy users do not stand a chance.

Out of curiosity, what specifically do you think “normal” users wouldn’t be able to cope with during out-of-box-experience?

I believe OOBE has gotten quite simplified in the past few years. As long as you’re not concerned with local accounts or telemetry config (which “normals” absolutely are not), I think the setup is a breeze.

It depends, most of our users can’t even set up an iPhone that is in MDM, they just have to enter their M365 email address and password and many can’t even cope with that and we have to enter the email address for them!

They certainly couldn’t set up mail etc. on the phone without help, after it is activated.

An admin added some software to a new PC yesterday and the user couldn’t log back in, when they came back to their desk… The username was “Admin Jon” and they just kept trying to enter their own password, without looking at the screen and realising that the wrong name was being displayed. The helpdesk had to change the username back to the users, then they couldn’t enter the password - they had hit caps lock and num lock was off…

When Office asks for the M365 username/email address to activate, they come to us, because their domain user doesn’t work.

Don’t underestimate how complex even knowing what your MSA account name and password is for some people. We have to live through it on a daily basis, and it is worse at the moment, because we are rolling out 150 new PCs.
