I keep worrying when Microsoft is going to roll World of Warcraft into one of their nonsense gaming subscriptions
Or how about: In order to be able to play your favourite game, you need to spend $500 for Windows 12: Xbox Live Edition ![]()
I’ve had a dream where they rolled WoW into the $30 monthly Xbox Game Pass subscripotion exclusively. I don’t think I would continue to play anymore. I’m not that locked in to it
One thing @Leo said was that people use the web browser to check email. I almost never do that, I always use either Apple Mail or Outlook (the full fat client), depending on whether I am on my own device or the company one. I even have Gmail running through Apple Mail on my phone, I don’t even have the Gmail app installed - although I only use Gmail to sign up to sites I don’t trust, as I rarely ever look at the mail coming into that account.
I use the browser to check my email and social media. I used to use email clients (and Twitter clients!) but sometime in college, I just started using the browser. It’s good enough. On phones I still use a “client” I suppose. I use the Gmail app.
(As an aside, yesterday I learned: the Gmail app supports calls via Google Meet! I was trying to use my iPad Pro for therapy instead of busting out my Macbook Air. I was expecting to use the web browser for meet . google . com but the link opened in the Gmail app and it was actually pretty nice)
The web has gotten good enough. I even use Apple Music / Spotify (back in the day) through the web for the most part. A lot of “native” apps have become shitty in the wake of not being native apps anymore. Just websites wrapped in a wrapper. Chrome Web Apps(progressive web app?) in 2018 was a better spotify experinece than the actual windows apps.
At work I liked the full legacy Outlook client, but I’m on a Mac now for work so I use the new Outlook which is essentially a webapp in a wrapper. I still use it though.
You may be an exception to that general rule. I tend to use Outlook client myself, but my spouse and several others I know just use the web version of either Outlook or Gmail.
My wife uses Apple Mail on her iPhone and iPad. I think my daughters are the same, Mail app on their phones.
@iFish I’ve never heard of/seen Google Meet, is that the replacement for Duo?
It sounds like yes. But it was supposed to be their version of Zoom / MS Teams. Google Meet - Wikipedia
The Glencadam distillery in Brechin sure brought back some memories. Last century, I was stationed at the now closed RAF Edzell base. I lived in Brechin for almost two years at government expense. Lot of places to visit in this part of Scotland.
