Well, in reality it could go one of two ways. Either the way I suggested (or something like it), or we tear ourselves to pieces in fractal micro-niches. But I think it’s at least somewhat uncontroversial to say that, barring a massive collapse in technology and transportation, we’re likely past the point of no return in terms of organizing and identifying primarily by geography. It remains to be seen whether or not migration causes us to group up geographically based on other factors, but I think that’s generally unlikely. So, as an optimist, I think things are going to restabilize around non-geographic identity factors, and we (or, our descendants) will learn to live in a new norm, but I concede there’s other possibilities.
