I know it would never work because of “talk time”, but wish Corey Doctorow was on for the start of this show regarding regulation/China. The reason the US only has a few big players is not because of too much regulation, it’s because of lack of regulation of financial markets. You can argue about the regulation on the actual tech, but we live in a place now where the entrenched can legally buy off policy makers, avoid taxes, and can squash any chance of a new entry. OpenAI is “new”, but it only came to be because it came from the right people/places. Under Biden the USG tried to do the bare minimum and the billionaire VC class decided it’s time to buy the next government. Not sure how long this can all last. Also a little LOL at China not regulating AI/tech.
As for the overarching question about a “bubble”. AI is not going anywhere, but I do think it’s heading towards being a more enterprise thing than consumer though we will continue to see little things enter consumer market. So no it won’t be a bubble because the tech is the tech, but I do think the data centers and money to build them will be a part of the bubble that does not just burst, but explodes in horrific fashion. Again, not because AI is not going to be around but because the technology will get better and better and run on less powerful hardware. Whether your phone, your laptop, or some small device eventually I think 99% of all “AI” tasks will be done on that side of the technology meaning all the big data centers will not be needed. Some will be, but not what is being built now. As mentioned on the network, unlike fiber which was nice benefit of the early 00’s bust you can’t just leave these data centers dark until needed as the hardware becomes obsolete after a few years.
LLMs for coding and similar, small models for most other tasks and let’s go!!
Loved panel, as they are two of my favorite guests.
You want to know the future of robots, you have a podcast, with tech people who “get hyped” over tech and you keep ADHD looking away from the discussion. Because in the end, nobody really wants them or cares that much.
Its like the secret Podcast tell like Harper’s heartrate monitor.
I am dying to know what the device at Harper’s suggestion that Leo eventually purchased. It looks like a small ball with a screen. I’ve been had and now I want one.
