The reason for switching between winter and summer time

It’s that time of year again when multiple TWiT hosts (Leo included) complain about the clocks changing as North America moves from Standard Time on to Daylight Time. No one ever speaks up in defence of it, which surprises me as there were good reasons for its introduction. Let’s use Petaluma, CA as an example.
