Question of the Day: Use a phone holder in your car?

I have an iottie air vent wireless charging mount for now. I drive home for lunch, and each way just slap it in the mount for some quick charging and podcasts.

I really like the looks of the proclip. With enough poking around, I see the wireless charging options. I’m going to give it a try.

This is what I have, too. Cheap and does the job and doesn’t interfere with wireless charging!

I have my phone in a Mophie case that makes it wireless charging (iPhone 6s) and in my car I have a vent mount Mophie magnetic wireless charge mount.

Hi

The best for my needs I have found so far is the Ram Mount X-Grip. Other people must think so too as I had one stolen from one of my cars. Tablet, Laptop & Phone Holders for Cars, Trucks, etc | Vehicle Mounts

I have the same car! It is one of my favorites I have ever had. I was using it to pull out tree stumps the other day in the garden and it worked great! Mine is the TDV8.

Yup, TDV8. Makes me smile that HM still drives her 2008. Can’t afford the new shape obviously.

I use a spider phone holder. I rely on my phone for navigation when I am going anywhere where I have not been before.
My car is old and does not have navigation build in.

In my 2003 Nissan 350Z, I didn’t because the car was manufactured in that awkward period between tape decks and aux input jacks. There was no easy or convenient way for me to get audio from an iPod (or later from an iPhone) to the car’s audio system. …so I went without and burned CDs. Kept my phone on the passenger seat and only used it for navigation when I needed to (which was rare because it became my commuter car and road trips were taken in our other car).

In our 2009 Nissan Murano, we had an aux-input jack. We used a phone mount that connected to an air vent. It was fine until I got an iPhone X with no headphone jack…but that was a few months after we traded it in.

In our 2017 Nissan Murano, we have Apple CarPlay. There’s no need to mount the phone because anything we need to see is now on our console display. I LOVE CARPLAY! When we eventually get a second car (to replace the 350Z I sold in September), I want to make sure it has CarPlay.

I’ve used this for years screwed into the dash where I can see the phone as easy as the instruments and radio.

I also bought the vent mount to use in rental cars (it doubles as kickstand for watching videos).

Nowadays they sell it as a combo pack making the vent mount free.

Agreed! Love Android Auto when we’ve had a rental car with it on holidays. I like that Google let you run the Auto interface on the phone itself - why don’t Apple do this?

Very tempted at trying this in the RR as all the install is in the AV rack in the boot (it just replaces the nav DVD player). I probably wouldn’t even route the mic and connectors through to the cabin, just leave the phone connected in the boot.

Every car should have CarPlay and Android Auto standard! No reason not to other than auto makers wanting to push their own crappy infotainment systems and charge you for navigation updates

I have used CarPlay and Android Auto both extensively and they are both fantastic.

One of the advantages of having to buy a new car this year (last one got totaled) was getting Android Auto.

I have one of those magnetic disc thingies. I’m a compulsive Waze user, and I listen to podcasts. My next car will have Car Play!

I have been using Velcro forever. As long is there a place for the “hook” side on the dash, Good to go. I can even use my Qi charger with the Velcro. The Mag Mounts interfere with the Wireless Charger.

I’m currently using a vent mount with wireless charging - https://www.iottie.com/Product/Detail/5002/Easy-One-Touch-Wireless-Fast-Charging-Dash-_-Windshield-Mount

I’m typically running Android Auto on the Pixel 4XL and this holder works pretty well. I like the one-handed usage it offers when inserting/removing the phone from the holder. My phone it connected via Bluetooth to a Himbox Bluetooth adapter that is plugged into the AUX port. The Bluetooth connection in my car’s headunit is terrible, so I had to bypass it.

I have seen a company that makes an add on to the headunit that will add Android Auto and Car Play to it, but it is $600+ right now. I think I’ll milk the Android Auto phone app until Google kills it.
