I was debating posting this last night, I decided not to at the time. But I think maybe it’s worthwhile to share here as I’ve come to make this forum one of my homes on the internet.
This episode came out at a crucial time, and TWiT podcast network re-starting as well: I’ve decided to quit smoking weed. I have realized I have a substance abuse problem and it’s really worse than I thought.
I used to rely on TWiT shows during my sleepless biphasic nights; but now I’m relying on the TWiT shows to keep me entertained and distracted from my withdrawal symptoms and how much I really wanna smoke.
Yesterday was my first full day smoke free in over 8 years; I was struggling hard in the evening so MBW came in clutch. I don’t feel comfortable experiencing a biphasic sleep cycle this early on during my detox so I’ve been forced to stay up well past my regular bed time (8pm!) to midnight just to ensure I sleep the entire night. My body doesn’t accept more than 6 hours of sleep at a time
I still feel a bit weird sharing that—it’s kind of off topic.
This episode was really great! We’re so back.
EDIT: I’m 1 week fully clean. I’m very proud of myself.
Congratulations on acting on your resolution and for sharing it here. Odds of success are significantly improved by doing that.
That was a decisive episode. I really liked the discussion on Apple’s slamming headlines together with absurd extrapolations. That must stop. Jason’s explanation made huge sense – and pointed to some obvious ways to change the gonzo notifications. I’m betting the Apple SVPs have been jamming hard on a fix; they and their employees and may well have cut their vacations short. Apple has lots of clever employees; they should be able to figure this out. I watched the podcast episode; I love how Jason sat there silent for minutes near the end with no reaction on his face. Was he thinking? Meditating? Playing solitaire? He has so many good things to say, and he’s mastered the art of saying absolutely nothing at all.
One off-the-wall suggestion for sleeping and health overall: try a grounding pad on your bed. I recommend listening to Dave Asprey’s podcast episode with Clint Ober. Clint is a retired cable guy; from that background, he applied his EE expertise to biologicals. I was satisfied with the explanation they gave there. I have had a medical condition that was not responding to standard health care treatments; it cleared itself up within about 2 weeks of using the grounding pad nightly. Also, my sinuses get clogged regularly in the wintertime; they have been astonishingly clear since I grounded while sleeping. I got my mat from Hooga Health and the Brand-A website ($30). There are cheaper mats around, but I trust the Hooga brand from some other purchases. The rubbery texture is slightly distracting, but you can place the mat under a [cotton] sheet and have it still work. I sorta do mine half and half with the sheet over the grounding pad. There are more expensive options around, but they’re completely unnecessary to simply experiment with grounding.
There is a tiny amount of published science around grounding tech; there needs to be more. I can provide references here if anyone is curious. As an engineer, I looked at the tradeoffs. It’s a simple and cheap device. The explanatory model for what happens with a grounding mat is clear. WRT the physics/biology, there is absolutely no downside. I suppose that lightning could strike, but the grounding line has a 120kΩ resistor to limit current. The main thing that was stopping me was what my medical care team would think. Screw that – what they [might] think is unimportant in the long game. I’ve also thought of a couple of possibly patentable things that Clint’s company could do. That could help advance the science.
Well, that was a longer response to your slightly off-topic message. You can feel better now.
Good luck with it. I hope you can keep with it and get yourself clean.
I’ve been “lucky”, weed makes me ill (stomach cramps) or I fall asleep within a couple of minutes, if someone smokes in my vicinity. I only tried it once, but I have been to several parties over the years where other people have smoked and I’ve had to leave or I ended up asleep in a corner… Worse was when a friend had some “black tar”, he smoked in an enclosed space and I had stomach cramps within about 20 minutes. So I’ve never even been interested in smoking it, I avoid being near people who smoke it, if I can.
I did used to smoke cigarettes, I stopped smoking 27 years ago now. I would say I gave up (i.e. the craving went away) about 7 years ago. That isn’t in the same league as what you are doing, but I feel for you.
Stay strong.
Let me just add my well wishes to your future.
Hang in there! You can do it one day at a time!
Y’all’re the best. Thank you for the kind words. Everyday has gotten easier.
When I was in college there never were any “leftovers.” If I had it, I’d smoke it.
Fast forward 50 years and I’ve had some never-used (legal) THC drops in my medicine cabinet for two years. The desire goes away everntually. I haven’t used any mind-altering substances (including booze) in years. My attitude is that I can’t afford to lose any more brain cells.
Moderation is my biggest killer. I’m an all or nothing kind of guy.
It would be nice if I could just enjoy stuff here and there, but that’s never been how I function. (Maybe it’s something to strive for; but I find it stressful)
If I love something, I really wanna do it all the time.
Whether it be smoking weed, going to the gym, or just going to brunch with my pals.
Imagine being a diabetic living with someone who thinks at holiday times a house is broken if there’s not sweets on display at all times… It’s sure a stress on my ability to tell myself no. (I have to think that way rather than think that someone has a death wish for me )
