I’m still listening to the show, but I wanted to share a fun bit of news about me: Yesterday I finally got my drivers license! I’m excited to finally get a car and start using CarPlay and having opinions on apps in the car.
I’ve been driving since 1986, but I got my first vehicle with CarPlay last month (a Cupra Tavascan). It integrates well with the onboard system and makes listening to podcasts and audio books easier. I haven’t used it for much else yet - the car has integrated ChatGPT and its navigation system is online, so gets traffic information etc.
And Apple Maps and the onboard navi both try and send me the wrong way up the street I live in (I live on a one-way street)… I have submitted a correction to Apple, I wonder how long it takes, until it is updated.
Mine is wireless, but the phone is then on the inductive charging pad on long trips, which makes it get hot. Unlike a lot of the Chinese models, which include ventilation from underneath from the AC to keep the phone cool, the Tavascan blow a bit of cold air down on the phone, which does work a bit, but not that well.
For a long journey, being wired is a better solution, for the longevity of the phone.
Congrats. Please be careful to keep your eyes on the prize road .. and not end up in a fight with an AI over which music to play on your way to the wrong destination (it is technology after all, so when it goes wrong, it frequently goes really wrong )
I hate navis. The only times I really get lost or take the wrong turnings are when I listen to the navi!
What I really hate is that they all seem to take the Autobahn instead of the direkt route. From here to our other main site, the Autobahn goes in a big curve around the major cities and adds over 100KM to the journey. If you drive over land on the road that goes directly to the main Autobahn behind the big cities, it takes about as long, uses a lot less fuel and is nicer than sitting on the Autobahn for all that time.
If I ignore the navi and take the better route, it spends the first hour of the journey telling me to turn around and go back or divert over an even longer route to get to the Autobahn.
The problem is, the second part of the journey needs to be on the Autobahn, so I can’t select the option to avoid the Autobahn and adding towns as waypoints takes me off the correct route to go through those towns, then back onto the road I want…
As a new driver, I love navigation systems. I grew up playing video games and games were also a big reason why I wanted to finally start driving; games often have a mini map in the bottom corner so I really like having it on all the time haha. That’s also why I really love the HUD on my dad’s Lexus. The HUD feels even more like a video game.
The wireless adapter I got was very easy to setup. Two concerns. One, it seems to get very hot to the touch. It’s in the enclosed console of my car, so I don’t have to worry about accidentally touching it. Just not crazy about the heat in there. Two, it stays on even when the car is off. Doubt that’s much of a drain on the battery. It’s probably so CarPlay will auto connect to my iPhone when I get in, though that probably means the phone would be connected to the adapter any time I’m in the house.
I agree with @big_D. I’ll still use wired on long trips to keep the phone charged. Around town, wireless should be fine for the phone’s battery.
This seems like an issue the car maker(s) could solve. Have one USB slot that is always powered, versus another that is only powered when the car is. Or am I not understanding the real issue? (Car audio tech is kind of a mystery to me, I’ve never had a new enough car to have any modern tech in it to play with.)
