I buy my Apple products using the Apple Military discount…

I just ordered a 512GB Neo for 659.97 UK Pounds from Amazon.co.uk (and normal UK prices at Apple and other stores are quoted as 599 and 699 pounds) , so it appears some discounting does exist. Delivery is supposed to be tomorrow. ![]()
I am fascinated by what may be happening with this. Have a feeling that using mobile phone chips that might otherwise have been discarded could shake up the mass market laptop field almost as much as the iPhone shook up the mobile phone world, especially with the RAM shortages and other global impacts. It’s going to be an interesting period.
What is your use case of the device going to be?
Did you buy it with something in mind? Or just general curiosity?
My current home laptops are old Windows 10 units, and usage is low-stress - no video editing or gaming, just web browsing, email and Excel. I’m not happy with the way Windows 11 is heading, and having had MacBooks as work machines (including a 2015 model in 2022 which I think had 8GB) I was pretty happy with how they worked and ran the software I needed.
So a low-spec MacBook is kind of an insurance policy if things don’t improve with Win 11. It would meet my needs, run the software I use, and not require as much adjustment as a shift to a Linux distro. I’ve been installing and tinkering with Linux since Slackware in the mid 90’s, but haven’t felt comfortable with shifting all of my computing to any of the distros I’ve tried.
