I usually keep the phone stock. I looked at launchers before - but every Smartphone I have ever owned has been Samsung phones. So, I am used to their launcher.
It is a nice phone, and I was able to upgrade to Android 10 yesterday after I set it up.
I ALMOST got the S10e, but I like the finger print reader on the rear. And, this was an unplaned purchase/ I didn’t wanna spend anymore money than the S9 (I didn’t really wanna spend that)
It sounds like their launcher got better over the years. There was a point when even I bought a generalized Android phone and still went to another AOSP release. It was either wait or get a nightly build from another source code compilation. Mind you I’ve never owned a Samsung phone.
I like what the Android manufacturers are doing with fingerprint readers too. Both using the back/sides of the case or using the screen itself. Makes encryption way easier too.
I last used the Samsung launcher with a Galaxy S3, it is night and day. It was overloaded and rubbish back then, it is pretty usable now. I find the Huawei EMUI a little better, but there again, I’ve been using it for the last 2 plus years.
For what it’s worth: I once “repaired” the screen of a cracked S4. While the operation itself was a fun challenge and pretty doable, I ended up having a phone that worked well but had pretty strong radio inferences on the screen (different types of flickering when different types of radio where working moderately to heavily). So, at least back then, I was able to repair the screen - but I was surprise to find that I must have screwed up the shielding somehow that the phone felt “badly repaired” afterwards. Just as a note what to look out for if anyone attempts this, I suppose.
My son has a Huawei phone - his mother bought it new for him when he cracked the screen of his S7 edge that his Aunt gave him (it was a used phone - by her). I have looked at his phone a few times, but I can’t say I am a fan of the Huawei interface. But, I guess we all have our preferences.
I started out on a Samsung Note II - it was given to me by my son’s Aunt (it was an old phone they no longer used). I loved that phone and the huge screen. But, since it was from China, it was locked down a bit. You could not install the Google Play store, and the GPS only worked in China (no way to install US maps).
Eventually, I got a Samsung J3, because I wanted to be able to install stuff. But like I said earlier, I have only ever had Samsung phones.
I considered trying to dit myself, but I have neck issues. I cannot look down and do a particular thing for very long - otherwise I have to go to the chiropractor. So, that would be added cost.
If I was going to get the screen fixed, I’d just pay for it.
Update: Well, I am really liking my new Samsung S9. The sound is clearer, there are 2 speakers (instead of 1 - that was on the S8), and the camera takes better photos (compared to my previous S8).
